Eric Von Kurtz was born into an Air Force family in Pennsylvania in 1956 and he lived in Australia, Colorado and Florida. He was self-taught and had a rare, natural musical gift. If he could hear it or think it, he could play it immediately, first take.

Thus he was known for his prowess as a sideman and session musician. He had a sharp wit that kept his band mates and friends in stitches. Never a dull moment when Rick was around!

He moved to Birmingham in 1976 and played with The Wild City Dogs (76-77), High Roller (77-80) and recorded dozens of songs with Randall Richards and Mike Matos on their solo projects.

Bruce “Bird” Crain

1980-1984
Bass

Bird grew up in a musical family, and started playing bass in the mid 1960’s when he was 13 years of age. He then started playing in night clubs, at festivals and at private parties with local bands in Starkville, MS, Columbus, MS and Jackson, MS.

In 1979 he began playing in Birmingham, AL with the band High Roller, and did some session work at the Music Place Recording Studio, formerly New London, and later some sessions at Boutwell Recording Studio. Around that time he met Don Tinsley, a multi-talented instrumentalist/song writer/singer who was interested in putting a band together to show case his original songs.

Bryan Owings

1982-1984
Drums

Bryan was born in Las Vegas, NV in 1956. Bryan’s Dad was in the Air Force so he moved around as a kid. His early school years were in Alabama and Mississippi and then later the Washington, DC area. His mom encouraged him to play piano and then later his interest switched to drums.

He attended Berklee College of Music for one semester. He moved to Birmingham in 1978 and started playing in local bands like Angelo Toad, Riverchase and High Roller. He joined the Mortals in 1982 and played live and recorded with them until the group split up in 1984.
